Seeker of Silences Opening Chapter

On Hoping for More: The present moment is the seed of fulfillment.

Could I have hoped for more? When no answer is sought, the question answers itself. Everything is just the way it is because no other way exists. All moments in the waving ocean of time are meant to be just as they are, not as I would hope them to be. My own decisions have led me to this moment, whatever it holds within. I alone am the harbinger of my own experiences. Hope many times denies myself and the present moment—it is a false statement of lack.

Like all illusions, my hope also includes a promise of deeds. If I am wise enough to found my hope in the direct experience of what is, and what I am, my deeds will sow seeds of fulfillment. Time flows and the conditions will change. Eventually, my experience of what is approaches my hope. It happens carefully at first, but over time, my hope shakes hands with my experience like old friends. Thus, I regain my once forgotten friendship with myself.

Continuous acceptance of the present moment caresses the seed of fulfillment until it bursts into a flower. My experience of the present moment is the purpose of existence. If a flower unfolds and reveals its beauty before my eyes, then my experience of beauty is the purpose of the flower. If the flower withers, it becomes an image of death and decay. In turn, my experience of death and decay is the purpose of the flower.

When I understand the flower, I can realize the freedom in my life. It is not freedom as a spiritual or physical concept, but something much deeper. Despite the conditions, I am free to experience everything I do. I am free to experience my own world. That freedom whispers of my hope to the ears of the world, and the world echoes my whispers back in its own unique way.

The world answers my hope without hesitation or judgment, with acceptance and love. But it does so only if I treat myself with unwavering acceptance and love. I find the answer to the question “Could I have hoped for more?” in the peace and silence within. There is nothing left to hope for. I have everything I will ever need ‘here and now’.
